Note From LoLo 5

Hi Fellow Decorating Friends,

I've missed my post for the last week. I haven't been near a computer. I have been working for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. I stayed at the park, where our Relay was held, for 2 days and a night. My Line Dance group has a team in the Relay each year, which I am the captain. We run a concession stand at the Relay for one of our many fundraisers. I am a cancer survivor, so this is very important to me.

I'll leave you with my thought for today:

"Cancer is a thief. It steals from all places, from everyone involved and shows no mercy. We should all fight cancer the same way, with relentless determination."
Please get involved in your local Relay For Life. The joy you will receive working for this great cause is indescribable. Your efforts can help save lives, and families.

Thanks,
LoLo5

Guide to Buying Living Room Furniture

Author: Amanda Somers

After you are done with the living room in fresh wallpaper and paint, and are also through with the flooring and upholstery, how do you go ahead with buying the right furniture that goes with the color and theme? Is this a common picture you often encounter? First of all, relax. You will most certainly come across a range of contemporary living room furniture that compliments your overall decor and styling. But before you go out and shop for modern sofas, recliners and trendy entertainment units as everything else, here are a couple of things you might want to consider.

The Living Room Area:
Ideally, the size of your furniture must be in proportion to the size of your living room. You don’t want petite furniture for bigger spaces or something too bulky that occupies all the space. Work out on your personal taste and fit it with practical details like the room size and styling. For smaller living rooms, opt for modular and functional furniture and keep in mind that heavy upholstery can make it look all crammed. You also get furniture that can function as day sofa and be transformed into a full-fledged bed. Do not forget to fashion the space in a manner that allows open room to move comfortably. For instance, a hi-tech spread out sofa would suit larger room settings. So, measure the area and try to buy furniture with size and details in mind. Also pay attention to where exactly in the living room you want the furniture to be placed. Once you have decided, measure the area and then keep the dimensions in mind (or jot it down on paper) and keep it in mind while your selection. It is also important to take into account the space required between the wall and the furniture while measuring. Read More

Texture In The Home

Texture plays a dominate roll in the home that is often missed and overlooked. From your floors to accessories, it is important to stay mindful of the texture combination's as they are from the very fabric that are home is woven.

Every single object in your home has a texture. The fabric on your sofa may be smooth and plush while your travertine kitchen floor is cold and hard. These textures are the make up of the feeling your home exudes. Is your home warm and inviting with soft textures or minimalistic with sleek surfaces?

When designing a room, one texture is likely to dominate over all others. Most often, the predominate featured texture in a room is the largest clear area in the room – the floor. Walls, too, can play an enormous part, but are better left painted matte so to create a sophisticated, neutral backdrop for artwork, furniture and accessories.

Thus, your floor should be your starting point for the room design and is really worth spending the time and effort (but not necessarily the money) on getting it right before you rush into buying more expensive items.

Making Your Bedroom Work For You

By: LoLo5

Because of the fast paced world we live in, with our jobs, chauffeuring the kids to all of their activities, and all the dozens of other things we do each day, we spend more time in our bedroom than any other room in our house. Therefore, our bedroom should be a very calming place for us to get our much needed rest. It is very important that it be well designed and free from clutter. You should plan your room according to how it will be used, and choose your furniture carefully.

Before making any decisions about your bedroom decor, first decide what will be the most important to you in this space. Will your room be used primarily for sleeping? If this is your goal you will want to keep your design simple. Keeping your room free of distractions may result in a better nights sleep, making you feel more rested and alert the next morning. Many researchers believe that working in bed has a negative effect on our sleep patterns, due to the stress of the work on our brains. Our brain is still trying to process the information while we are trying to sleep. A television in the bedroom can also have the same negative effect on our sleep patterns. It might be a better option for you to leave the television watching to the living room, and just read a good book before falling asleep. Read More

Patio Furniture - What Type Should I Buy?

By Darren W Chow Platinum Quality Author

When trying to decide which type of patio furniture you may wish to buy, you may want to think about a couple of things first. I will cover a few points of interest that you may not have given consideration to that will aide you in your decision.

Weather and climate conditions

Due to the scientific laws know as entropy, all matter will face deterioration at some point in time. Patio furniture no matter how expensive or durable will ultimately face the same fate. Although this principle can't be reversed, consumers can take measures that will prolong the deterioration process. Consider for a moment what happens to something when it is left outside in to face the elements. Some things hold up longer than others will. Indeed, patio furniture made of plastic will have a better chance of enduring the moisture of the snow and rain than a wood based model. Wood should be waterproofed in a finished that will repel water and not soak into the wood. Although these models may go for more money, in the long run it stands the best chance of holding up over time. Read More.

Rearrange Your Space and Revamp Your Mood

Decorating Tips
By: LoLo5

Liven things up. A easy and fun way to revive a tired space is by moving around your furniture and decor. It's also a great way to finally get around to cleaning hidden and neglected areas.

Get a plan. Determine what you want the focal point of the room to be, such as the TV or the fireplace. Be sure and keep your primary seating, like your couch, facing your focal point. Get creative with your smaller chairs, tables, and accent pieces. Try placing them in several different positions until you find the perfect place.

Spiff it up and make it shine. Now that you've got your room rearranged clean it up and make it shine. Clean floors, walls, and baseboards. You'll be so proud of your space you can't help but be in a good mood.

Always remember. Put a little attitude in it.

June Decorating Tips For Your Flower Garden

By: LoLo5

What could be more beautiful than looking out from your deck or patio onto a flower garden that is is in full bloom. Here are some tips to keep your garden looking great for years to come.

FEED THEM RIGHT: The use of a high nitrogen fertilizer, the kind formulated for your lawns, encourages plants to create foliage, not flowers. For best results you should always use a bloom-boosting formula made specially for flower gardens.

FACE THE SUN: Most of your annual and perennial flowers will need full sun for at least 6 hours a day to produce an abundance of flowers. Keep this in mind when planting
.
GIVE THEM LOTS OF SPACE: Most of your perennial flowers will need to be dug up and divided every four or five years in order to continue blooming at their best.

DEADHEAD OFTEN: Snip of faded flowers regularly to encourage plants to rebloom and keep your garden looking well-groomed.

Be sure to pinch back your chrysanthemums (always remove a few inches of the growing tips and buds) before the end of June. This will ensure that the plants will remain full and compact.
